Celebration to honor Lee Layton Korean and WWII vet

Lee Layton Please join us at a celebration to be held in honor of Lee Layton who served in both the Korean War andin World War II. This even will be held at the Vinton American Legion Hall located at 105 N. R Ave. in Vinton, on Sunday, September 23, 2012 from 1-3 pm.

NCCC team Cedar Four works with the City of Sioux Falls

NCCC Cedar 4 Team Leader Joe is educating the two campers about vegetables growing in the bin.     By Jerome Frey   NCCC team Cedar 4 is working with the city of Sioux Falls, SD. During this project the team had the opportunity to work with many organizations including, Habitat for Humanity, Ground Works, Eco-Camp, Downtown Sioux Falls and DakotAbilities. During their work with Habitat for Humanity the team scrapped and painted two houses.

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 18 Corps Member Spotlight: Gina Mazzulli

    Name: Gina Mazzulli Hometown: Quincy, Mass.   Gina is currently serving as a member of Cedar 5 with the AmeriCorps NCCC at the Vinton Campus. Gina is a former Corps Member at the Charleston Campus. Through her service at the Charleston Campus, Gina gained skills in installing drywall, painting, roofing and trail building.

The Vinton Garden Club minutes of 8/29/12

VINTON GARDEN CLUB August 29, 2012 The Vinton Garden Club member of the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Central Region, Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa, Inc. and District II met in Cedar Rapids at Master Gardener Deb Walser home to see her ponds and gardens. She gave a very good walk through and educational program. Then members went to Vito’s for lunch and the meeting.

Iowa State Fair Berkshire Show

Reed Family Berks of Ottumwa showed the Champion Gilt and Reserve Champion Boar at the Berkshire Swine Show August 16 at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. The Champion Boar was exhibited by Brice Conover of Baxter. Vivian Benjegerdes of Mason City was awarded the Reserve Champion Gilt banner. The Premier Exhibitor award went to Shady Brook Farm of Oakland.

Iowa State Fair Duroc Show

Stewarts Duroc Farm of Waverly exhibited the Champion Boar and Champion Gilt in the Duroc Swine Show August 17 at the 2012 Iowa State Fair. Jack Bair and Family of Elkhart claimed Reserve Champion Boar honors and Ploeger Show Pigs of Pierson exhibited the Reserve Champion Gilt. Premier Exhibitor honors went to Matt and Tom Welk of Letts.

Treasurer Fitzgerald Encourages Iowans to Celebrate College Savings Month

AmeriCorps NCCC Class 18 Corps Member Spotlight: Connor Fannon

He decided to do a year of service in order to give back to communities and help people in need. He enjoys disassembling and reassembling machinery and electronics, drawing, Airsoft, woodworking and painting.

NCCC Team Comes to Summer Camp

By: Justine Miller Members of NCCC team Maple 5 arrived at Camp One Heartland in Willow River, Minn. July 16 with some faint memories of bug juice and camp songs. Camp One Heartland, a non-profit, began in 1993 as a camp for children infected with HIV/AIDS to come and simply be kids again. Since then the camp has grown to host other camps addressing issues such as transitional housing, Chron’s Disease and Colitis, and Camp Camp Revolution, a camp for kids ranging from 13 to 18 who identify themselves as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning or Ally (LGBTQA).

Lindsey Selis By: Rachel Lebeaux Name: Lindsey Selis Hometown: Potterville, Michigan Lindsey is serving as the Pine 2 Team Leader at the Vinton Campus. Lindsey sees NCCC as an opportunity to serve others by working hard to make sure that each individual she encounters is cared for and valued. Lindsey graduated from New Covenant Christian School in June 2006 and Olivet College in May 2012 with a BA in English and a concentration in Visual Arts.
